what's the most common reason for a "service engine soon" warning on a 1987 GMC S15 jimmy?

my 'service engine soon' light comes on randomely while the engine's not revving real high, any suggestions would be helpful

Most often it is telling you that the O2 (oxygen) sensor is dirty. Many auto stores will test this for free to get the sale of the part.
