The engines themselves are not reversed, meaning, they don't spin the other way. The air is forced forwards out of the engine, thus slowing the plane down. That's the simplest way I can think of explaining it.

I presume black exhaust coming out a jet engine on the runway is not good. Glad that's not my plane.
