When a jet engine touches down on a runway, the engines are reversed in order to help the jet to stop.?

Using your knowledge of velocity and acceleration, explain how this works.
The engines themselves are not reversed, meaning, they don't spin the other way. The air is forced forwards out of the engine, thus slowing the plane down. That's the simplest way I can think of explaining it.
