How was the fire in the fire box started of a Rail Road Steam Locomotive? Was there a flint or other device that started the coal or oil on fire? or did was wood used to start the fire and then coal added to it. Also how long did it take a Steam Locomotive
Wood and an oily rag, lit by matches., possibly initially on a shovel, then placed in the firebox. Then cola* was added bit by bit. It could take 2 to 3 hours to get steam up to operating pressure.
